About Cilybebyll

Cilybebyll is a semi-rural community located in the Swansea Valley in South Wales, about 10 miles north of Swansea City Centre and 4 miles from Junction 45 of the M4 Motorway. It is well situated for people wishing to take advantage of facilities in Swansea, and a range of attractions in the wider area, including the Brecon Beacons National Park, and the Gower Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

As well as being accessible from the M4 Motorway along the A4067 Swansea Valley By-Pass, Cilybebyll is easily reached along the A474 from Ammanford in the west, and from Neath, where the nearest mainline rail station, with direct links to Cardiff and London Paddington, is situated.

Pontardawe – a small rural town that provides many local facilities – is located less than a mile away on the western side of the Swansea Valley, with Cilybebyll situated on the opposite side of the valley across the River Tawe. The main villages in Cilybebyll include Alltwen, Fforestgoch, Gellinudd and Rhos, along with the historic hamlet of Cilybebyll itself, after which the community is named.

With a population of nearly 5,000 (2001 Census), Cilybebyll has two primary schools at Alltwen and Rhos, and is also served by Cwmtawe Comprehensive School in Pontardawe.   Welsh medium education is provided at Ysgol Gynradd Gymraeg Pontardawe and at Ysgol Gyfun Ystalyfera.

As well as being an attractive rural area with many public footpaths, Cilybebyll has a rich past, with evidence of its industrial, religious, social and settlement history still to be found. There are plentiful opportunities to enjoy this history and some splendid views as you walk around the area.

The Community Council has been an important part of the life of this community for over a hundred years, and its records, retained at the West Glamorgan Archive Service in County Hall Swansea, provide a useful source of reference to the past. This website provides a new source of information for the present and a valuable resource for the future.
